Things that interest me: 2017 Artsfest of Charles County

2017 Artsfest of Charles County

I had a real good day yesterday at the Artsfest in La Plata, MD. Sold sixteen books, ‘Twilight to Son Shine’, and payments were received by cash and my new card reader. I needed help from a customer to teach me how use my new reader, that was funny. I probably gave my spiel to a hundred people.

It was sunny and hot, towards the end of the day, my back was hurting, I was out of breath, out of energy and a little sick to my stomach from the heat. However, I trudged through and had a great day and was so happy with the outcome.

I want to thank Matt Jones, Meghan Harmon and Lew McIntyre for making a special point to visit me. They brought me some treasured memories and I’m very grateful for their friendships and support.

‘Life’s Journey Writers Guild’, also known as ‘the guild’ and ‘LJWG’, reserved two spots and I shared one of them with my new friend Carla. She can probably tell you my spiel word for word by now. Customers were attracted to her nice shiny jewelry and while they were leaving her table some stopped by mine. I think we made a good team.

LJWG of Charles County is an organization of writers headed by our President and writer/editor Yvonne Medley. We meet every third Saturday of the month at the ‘Waldorf West Library’ in Waldorf, from 2:30 to 4:30. Please come out and check us out. We might just be what you’re looking for, to help you with your book.

After the Artsfest, I clocked in at a well attended fundraiser for ‘Christmas in April’. The function was also the used as the transformation from the title of ‘Christmas in April’ to ‘Rebuilding Together’. Good food, good people and a good time.

‘Christmas in April’, will still have our annual event day on the last Saturday in April, but partnering with ‘Rebuilding Together’ gives us the ability to help more people of need on days other than just the end of April.

I got started at 6:30am and was home at 9:30pm. Those were normal hours in my youth, but now a days it’s a stretch to do half of that. Both events were so exciting and such a treasure. I love writing and working with my family of ‘Rebuilding Together’.

The first book of poetry, in the series called, ‘Thoughts into Poetry’

I just came from Books-A-Million and my hopes are up. Met with the general manager at the Waldorf, MD book store about them selling my book and having a book signing. My friend Sherrie Nieves initialized the talks, thanks Sherrie.

I will find out in two weeks if they are interested in doing it. If they are, then it will take place in three months. I’m very excited of the possible opportunity.

Christmas in April is now partnered with Rebuilding Together

The Charles County chapter of ‘Christmas in April’ has partnered with ‘Rebuilding Together’. This means the organization can have more charitable events throughout the year. So if you see us coming and we’re asking for volunteers or contributions, below is one of the reasons why.

We repaired twenty houses on ‘Event Day’, 4-29-17, having different degrees of need.

I had the pleasure of being involved with Bernard Rosier’s house on Fairgrounds Rd., in Bel Alton, MD.

My co-captain Jack Conlon, of La Plata MD., and I had the satisfaction to work along with four volunteer groups. One was; the ‘College of Southern Maryland Construction Management Program’, CSM for short, headed by Professor Tony Stout and another was, Zion Wesleyan Church of Waldorf, MD. headed by Jason Moore.

Members of all groups had to leave before this picture was taken, so it doesn’t show the true count of volenteers. The job started at 7:30 and ended at 3:30. That’s my buddy Jack Conlon in yellow.

We had a total of twenty-four volunteers, plus some family members to tackle two major jobs, some smaller ones and performing landscaping around the whole house.

The largest undertaking was the removal and installation of the kitchen base cabinets and countertops performed by the CSM group. We also added a dishwasher that wasn’t in the existing layout.

The second job was the removal and installation of a bathroom shower stall, preformed in large part by Orlando with the ‘Zion Wesleyan Church’ group and completed by the CSM group.

Some of Mr. Rosier family took care of lunch and other task that needed attention.

Two employees, Matt Renke and JJ Noble, of ‘Partner Electric Services’ did the electric needed for the dishwasher and other projects. They also contributed some material for future jobs.

We had a well tuned job and beautiful day, while all parties worked smoothly together. I would like to thank all that gave their time, material and effort to make this a very successful project.

Not only do I want to thank everyone that was involved on my house, but everyone that was involved in Christmas in April all together. The board members work tirelessly all year long to make this a great Event Day, especially our President Alvin Stewart. I feel Alvin doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. If you want to thank him in person, there’s a good chance you would run into him at his Starbuck’s in La Plata, MD.

Thanks to all involved.
