Random thoughts: life changes

Life changes

Did I ever tell you how and where I got saved?

In two days, it will be 27 years since I walked out of Charles County Detention Center in La Plata, MD. I was picked up by my mom and two sons after a stay of nine months.

That midnight we drove past Lady Liquors and went for a pizza and soda instead. To drive past that liquor store was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Life is much better without the drink and the drug.

While I lived in the jail, I got saved by Christ Jesus on February 20, 1990. My mom’s minister visited me every Thursday like clockwork and answered every question I had in a very personal and astute way. He was God’s emissary that led me to Him.

When I was released on June 6, 1990, I immediately started going to Alcoholics Anonymous and still do. In ’91, I started to volunteer at the same detention center by taking AA meetings in there. In ’93 I stopped carrying the AA message and began escorting four men, what I felt were Godly men from Forest Park Baptist Church, behind the walls of safety to deliver the Gospel message.

It wasn’t long, when one of the men wasn’t able to make it and since I was just a babe in Christ and scripture, all I could do was talk with them about what God did for me. The next time that happened, I had a tailored message from scripture specifically designed for the inmates. Before the year was out, I was the only one going in, from my group. I did that till 2000.

Since 2001, I’ve been a member of Southern Maryland Christian Academy and see Pastor Marvin and bunch of my friends often. However, since 2002 I frequent church once a month, every other month or not for months at a time.

I have a very personal relationship with my Savior Jesus and my poetry is based on what He has done for me.

I am so proud to be clean, sober and Saved.

My best bud Raymond, was the first to buy my book. He bought it through Amazon and also left an excellent review on their site. I wasn’t able to get a picture of Raymond, the book and myself, till last night. Here’s the picture.

He was the first person to touch my book, excluding the packers.

Kay, manages the La Plata Wal-Mart optometrist department and she overheard me putting the soft sell on a customer. She asked me some questions, then made an appointment for me to bring her a book on the fallowing Monday. Me likes!

Suzanne was my latest vampire. When someone takes my blood, I try to hide my nervousness by talking to them. I was giving her the hard sell and after she took all the vials she needed, I gave her a book and came back the next day for the money.

Suzanne the vampire

When I came back, Suzanne asked, ‘Do you have another book with you?”

I said, ”Yes.”

She said, “Good, because Debbie want’s one.”

I said, “Cool!” I went out to the van, got a book for Debbie, then came back in for my picture, money and hug. I walked out with a big smile brought on by the simplest of gratitudes.

It’s been a while since I worked this hard for such a small amount of money. The promotion of the book is really important to me. Eventually my book is going to fall into the hands of someone with the resources to promote it beyond my abilities.

Thank you guys for buying my book.

Maggie Joyner

Maggie bought my book at Maries Diner in La Plata, MD. and also came out to support me at my first book signing on my birthday, May 20th, at Market Day.

While at the diner, she bought a $60 fundraising ticket from me. It’s for the Christmas in April * Charles County annual Sunset at Mount Aventine gala. On June 10th Christmas in April will officially become Rebuilding Together. The board members are very excited about the change and we hope you will come out and meet us. You can gather with us for tasty refreshments, mingling and a couple of special guest speakers, that should to peak your interest on some current events.

This is my mechanic and neighbor and he purchased my book as soon as he heard that it was published. I’m standing in a hole and he is standing on a cinder block. 😊 Not really.

I asked this attractive lady to take a picture of me and a happy customer and after she took the picture she asked, “Can you tell me about the book?” I’m learning how to be a salesman and shortly after she took the picture, she gave $10 for my book. Very nice lady.

We also have my good friend Bruce. He helped me on Market Day by handling the money and watching the table while I was away from it. He also sold a book when I was food hunting, so it seems he was perfect for the job.

Thank you guys for buying my book!

Marshon

I see Marshon two or three times a week at the La Plata, Starbuck’s. As you can tell he’s a Millennial, which are typically children of us Baby Boomers. He always helps me with computer application questions. My latest lesson was about the Cloud.

Thanks guys for buying my book.

The first book of poetry, in the series called, ‘Thoughts into Poetry’

I just came from Books-A-Million and my hopes are up. Met with the general manager at the Waldorf, MD book store about them selling my book and having a book signing. My friend Sherrie Nieves initialized the talks, thanks Sherrie.

I will find out in two weeks if they are interested in doing it. If they are, then it will take place in three months. I’m very excited of the possible opportunity.
